American Wedding Traditions

People in the United States follow many interesting traditions and customs when it comes to their wedding. You can often find many American wedding traditions similar to the wedding customs of some other countries. In fact, most of the wedding traditions that Americans follow are borrowed from other cultures or countries. This points to the eclectic lifestyle of Americans.

Wedding Traditions

It is a known thing that the couple of honor always reserves a special place for their close friends and family at their wedding function. As per ancient American traditions, there is a funny explanation for this. The close friends of the bride were asked to dress similar to that of the bride in the old days so that they can confuse the evil spirits that are believed to abduct the bride. Today, the bridesmaids, however, opt to dress differently from that of the bride, but they wear similar dresses in order to wish good luck to the bride, and follow the tradition to some point.

The groom and the groomsmen also had a great role in the ancient American wedding traditions, besides just slipping the diamond ring on the bride’s fingers. Traditionally, the groom and his friends will come and capture the bride, and go to the wedding venue. Even though it sounds weird, the tradition was pretty exciting and adventurous.

Bridal Shower

The bridal shower is one of the most important and interesting traditions in relation to the wedding functions. At the bridal shower, all the women related to the bride will pamper her with a variety of gifts and blessings. In addition, you can expect many interesting games and tasks during this wedding function.

In the 1500’s, the bridal shower was not intended just to treat the bride with glee. Rather, it was often conducted to raise the dowry money for the bride who belongs to a financially backward family. The present bridal shower trend started flourishing in the United States by the end of the 1800’s.

Wedding Cake

There is no denying the fact that the wedding cake is really crucial in order to represent the sweetness and delicacy of the relationship between the couple. Plus, it is the first task that the couple does together after becoming husband and wife. Hence, the wedding cake is considered very important in every wedding function these days.

Things were not the same during ancient times though. Traditionally, the groom used to break the wedding cake on the head of the bride during their wedding ceremony in order to symbolize fertility. Then the guests had to pick the bits of cake that fell off the bride’s head and keep it with them for good luck.
